D. Kojo Hamilton, MD, MBA, professor of neurological surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, has been named this year’s recipient of the Department of Neurological Surgery Faculty Teaching Award. The honor was presented during the department’s graduation exercises by Pascal O. Zinn, MD, PhD, MBA, the residency program director and Dr. Hamilton’s successor in that role.
The award recognizes Dr. Hamilton’s sustained commitment to educating the next generation of neurosurgeons. It marks his second time being selected by the residents and trainees of the department, having first received the recognition in 2020.
A Mentor to the Residents
Reflecting on the recognition, Dr. Hamilton offered a heartfelt message to the residents he has worked alongside.
“Watching you grow, question, and evolve into exceptional physicians has been one of my absolute greatest joys at University of Pittsburgh Neurosurgery,” he said. “Teaching you has kept me inspired every single day. I am profoundly moved and incredibly grateful to have been named this year’s recipient of the department’s Faculty Teaching Award during graduation exercises.”
He noted the particular meaning of being chosen twice by the people he works to support. “To be recognized twice, in 2020 and 2026, by the very hardworking people who constantly inspire me is an honor I will carry forever. Thank you. I am humbled.”
Dr. Hamilton also expressed his gratitude to Dr. Zinn, describing him as a distinguished colleague and friend who has carried forward the residency program’s commitment to training.
Looking Ahead
Dr. Hamilton framed the recognition as a fitting start to a busy and energizing season. The months ahead bring new trainees, teaching courses, ongoing research, and time to recharge.
“A very empowering note to the beginning of a summer filled with new trainees, teaching courses, research and recharging,” he said. “Onwards!”
